Smart homes are no longer something out of a science fiction movie. From video doorbells and smart thermostats to automated lighting and voice-controlled assistants, today’s technology makes it easier than ever to create a connected home.

But here’s what I’ve noticed: many homeowners focus on the devices themselves while overlooking the electrical system that powers everything behind the scenes. It’s a bit like buying a high-performance sports car and forgetting to check the condition of the road beneath it. Smart devices contain sensitive electronics that can be damaged by power surges caused by storms, utility issues, or large appliances cycling on and off. A single surge may not just affect one device. It can impact an entire network of connected equipment throughout the home.

Smart switches and dimmers can also require special attention. Some models need neutral wires that may not exist in older homes. I’ve seen homeowners purchase new smart controls only to discover their existing wiring isn’t compatible. Identifying these limitations early can prevent wasted time and unexpected expenses.

  • Have I avoided overloading outlets and power strips?
  • Is my home’s wiring appropriate for its age and electrical demands?
